What is CSR?

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in this context is the idea that great businesses want to go beyond just donating some cash to charity; they want to add real value to their local community, help in ways that mean more than just money and make that part of their community outreach and strategy.

Standard CSR often includes:

  • Community support – supporting local charities, community projects, schools or voluntary organisations
  • Charitable giving – donating money, products, services or professional expertise
  • Employee volunteering – giving staff paid time to help charities or community projects
  • Environmental responsibility – reducing waste, energy use, emissions and unnecessary consumption
  • Ethical business practices – treating customers, employees and suppliers fairly
  • Employment and wellbeing – providing fair working conditions, training, development and support
  • Local economic support – buying locally, supporting small businesses and creating local employment
  • Social impact – helping disadvantaged groups or addressing issues such as homelessness, poverty, education or social isolation

The key to great CSR is that it can also have far-reaching commercial benefit. Done genuinely, it can strengthen your company’s reputation, demonstrate your values, improve employee engagement and give customers and potential clients another reason to choose your business.
